This product is a wonderful Ankhi Jhyal also known as Tiki Jhya locally (grilled window) found in traditional houses of the Newar community; hand-carved by one of our skilled woodcarvers of Bhaktapur. This window has been made completely by interlocking carved pieces of wood at different angles. A tremendous amount of skill has been devoted to making and carving each and every intricate detail of this window to make it this fine and wonderful.
This window is usually located on the second floor because it allows light and air to enter the room but restricts the passersby to have a peek inside. Glass had not been used until recently, so the wood-carving has been applied not only to window frames and their extensions such as cornices, lintels and brackets, but also to the opening which is covered in a patterned wooden lattice, and often of unbelievable intricacy. They are most often geometrical design but sometimes religious motifs and animal or floral designs are put on a panel in the center of the grill or even replaced altogether.
